Moss, s/t CD

This disc consists of a 24-minute improvisation by Molly Berg, Olivia Block, Steve Roden, and Stephen Vitiello, recorded at a midnight concert in a cathedral.  The set was unrehearsed and was originally meant to be a duo between Berg and Vitiello, but Block and Roden joined and turned the session into something else altogether.  For a completely unannounced on-the-spot performance, there is a remarkable coherence, and a surprising calmness.  Berg’s clarinet and occasional vocals guide the piece in the beginning, and plenty of field recordings and electronics transform the space into a different environment.  Roden and Vitiello provide guitar, which sounds droney and at times percussive, but far beyond typical guitar sounds.  While brief in length, this disc documents a special moment that resulted from the impromptu grouping of a few like-minded individuals, and was well worth sharing.
