Humcrush & Sidsel Endresen, “Ha!”

By Travis Bird

This live recording of the Norwegian duo Humcrush is chaotic and full of energy: percussion and digital electronics, keyboards, and sampling accompaniment spew forth from the well-heeled duo of Thomas Strønen and Ståle Storløkken. But the real treat is the commanding voice of equally decorated collaborator Sidsel Endreson, a virtuosic performance tying everything together.

Although long passages are made up of free playing and sound-tinkering, the fourth (identically-named) track charts impressive groove territory, with a tight breakbeat and Endreson’s disturbing mumbles reminiscent of deranged hip-hop flow, or Damo Suzuki’s incantations. The fifth is quiet and almost sweet, with Endreson occasionally breaking into an impassioned howl. Her voice on this release is mesmerizing, moving from scatting to belting to stutters (“Wyatting”) with total control and abandon. Highly recommended for this especially.
