Chinatown Bakeries, “The Bad Year” CDr

This band has talent – the vocals on the album, in particular, stand out – and there are strong moments where the band explores compelling sounds, interesting time signatures, and brief, intelligently crafted melodic turns.  But the music collected here is also scattershot and diffuse.

Specifically, its various elements are not reigned in enough to distinguish this performance from dozens of other like-minded groups; the sound on the album combines overused genres – folk, indie, etc. – that are already so prevalent in popular culture that they only serve in this instance to obscure the band’s ability to create a unique take on music.

However, with revision of their work, a stronger sense of attention to musical structure, and a search for an original sound, I think the band could make something with a lot of merit.
