Mandom is a power drone duo from Eugene, Oregon, consisting of the prolific Roger Smith (chefkirk) and Don Haugen in a single 33-minute improvisation. They use a combination of test oscillator, a “function generator,” a broken switcher, and no-input mixing to fill in the drone puzzle just a bit more. The minimal gear setup makes for a more orderly sound palette that is makes all the duo’s choices stand out in more interesting ways from yer usual (although no word on whether any pedals were used).
This is purely non-narrative exploration, electronic and industrial but nonthreatening. It’s never too loud or very quiet. Long sections are unmistakably aviatory, with layers of ascending and descending engine overtones and rumbles of no-input idling. Cool recording for a CD-R to add to the oeuvres of these two.
