This split features a couple of my absolute favorite psych artists. So, I was very excited to pop this in and sit through the experience. Side A’s contribution from Sparkling Wide Pressure though honestly isn’t my favorite track from this project. One thing I’ve learned as I’ve followed along with SWP’s catalog is that there are two main sides to this artist. He’s got some stunningly gorgeous dreamwork that flows beautifully from one track to the next. He’s also got some less predictable psych noise that is a little tougher to get into. This side is more the latter. More banal, more random, and more experiment than deliberate musicianship. This is fine, because I still like his work as such, however, with each of his releases I always hope it’s his more intellectual side. Anyway, this is pure entrancement that relies on arrhythmic drumming, guitar improvisations, and other less than harmonic melodies. Side B features No Mind Meditation. This is a cosmic neurosis bent on spaced out redefinition. Self-discovery and reinterpretations of our worlds and realities. It invents new ways of seeing and perceiving. Walls are torn down and new open skies are constructed out of these aural visions. I think what I remember from the double tape Molecular Clock that was released on Goldtimers last year was more impressive, but NMM has yet to disappoint. They do a fantastic job of pulling you into a whole new expansive universe that opens up all kinds of mental possibilities. You still can’t miss either of these artists. A solid split.
