Ah, music. I am in general opposed to cover albums because most of the time it is simply an annoyance hearing a band put their “spin” on music that you love. The Beatles, however, have crossed the bridge into having a catalog of music equivalent to the great music of Tin Pan Alley and Denmark Street. There is really no way to destroy a Beatles song. Their seemingly simple melodies are ripe for interesting interpretations and new voices. When I opened the Minnesota Beatle Project, I got what I wanted, a disc full of solid covers with some interpretations unique to each act but keeping relatively true to the mood of each song. Having used, “Here Comes the Sun,” in my wedding, I was happy to hear that Motion City Soundtrack made few changes because it took me right back to the moment when I locked arms with my new husband and we introduced ourselves to the world as a unit. That was the best day of last year for me. Other really bright spots are Solid Gold doing “Love You To” and Dark Dark Dark and her Choir’s version of “Long Long Long”. Her voice puts a nice smoky finish on the tune. This is a good listen and even better, made for a good cause. I hope the schools in Minnesota get the art and music education they dream of.
