I assume that Philidelphia’s Dan Svizeny got the name for his rock obsession from the first single released by the Misfits.  This is surprising to me, because it seems like that’s where the Misfits influence ends. Instead, he puts together a skuzzy, fuzzy, hazy collection of lo-fi strummed-out jams and resonant vocals. He’s obviously a late night insomniac bedroom superstar. What I love is his atypical use of strange tempos and speeds. He melts a shoegaze blur of guitar into bored stoner visions and dark corridors of no wave downtempo stillness. There’s a pop sentiment to it that is felt but loses itself amidst the oozes of echoing slowburners that leak through cranked amps. The spaciness of this release though keeps it from ever venturing into mainstream territory.
You might guess that Cough Cool is just another artist among many who keep piling up the releases these days of lonely lo-fi rock. But, I think you’ll find that Cough Cool is contagious and will implant his germ in your ears and leave you symptomatically wanting more. There is totally something different about this act that I think everyone who visits this webzine can appreciate. So glad this one came out on vinyl. It would be out of place on any other format.
