Steve Roden & Machinefabriek, “Lichtung”

July 2, 2012
By Paul Simpson

This album contains edits of the soundtrack for an audio-visual installation that Roden and Rutger Zuydervelt did in collaboration with video artist Sabine Bürger. The emphasis is definitely on miniature sounds; the titles all reference natural objects (“Wind”, “Leaves”), as well as natural objects creating music (“Ice Strings”, “Birds Plucks Stones”, “Floor Radio”). As such, you hear what sounds like natural sounds playing music or arranged into music, as well as electronic processing. It has a bit of an audio snapshot feel, which isn’t to say that it doesn’t sound complete or that it’s not fully composed music. And it certainly doesn’t just feel like a field recording album either. Aaron Martin’s cello on “Ice Bow” adds a dramatic edge, as do the strings on “Wind”. The final track on the album is an edit of a live performance that the duo gave at the opening of the installation. and it ranges from hissing static to rich drone with clattering sounds to bass-heavy reverberations with soft vocals.
