Tenniscoats are already releasing their second album of 2012, so I should probably get around to reviewing the first, Papa’s Ear. The album mostly sticks to quiet, gentle, acoustic folk-pop, but also includes some lush Beach Boys-via-High Llamas arrangements. The fourth song, “Papaya”, is clearly the most easygoing, carefree and catchy song on here. The rest of the album doesn’t exactly feel sad, but it doesn’t stand out emotionally the way that “Papaya” stands out as being a casually joyous song. The album is pretty and well-orchestrated, but overall it ends up feeling kind of slight.
