This is a short set of downtempo, garagey electronic music from Nocow, the alias of Alexey Nikitin, apparently from St. Petersburg. Nocow has a handful of previous releases on a handful of small labels, and some videos and such, hustling and working it enigmatic from Russia. The set here (released by other labels digitally and on vinyl) sits in a curious in-between spot, without an arc or the polish of vocals beyond some abstracted samples, but also lacking the emotional build of longer pieces. As such, they’re almost like sketches or film music, or backing tracks. There’s some dubsteppy syncopation that comes and goes, blending in with touches of ambience. Some really pleasing pads though, making this plenty hypnotic.
