Oxykitten, “Octagonal Wax” tape

Oxykitten takes electronic music to a completely different level in Octagonal Wax. It’s easy to get lost within the pulsating synth and the imitation old school gaming sound effects. I’m not sure if I should be looking out for aliens invading earth or fighting my way through the next level in Maniac Mansion. Even with the zing of the electronics, it never becomes loud and obnoxious. There’s an underlying softness between the synth beats, which creates a dreamy quality. The interesting aspect of Oxykitten is that they use so much more than just electronic sounds. These range from the steady pulse of drums in one song to the more experimental static overlays in another song. The only way to really describe this music is otherworldly. There are surprises at every turn along with a range of feelings the songs exude. That alone, creating different moods with purely electronic music, is a noteworthy feat. Octagonal Wax certainly brings more to the table, giving other electronic bands someone to look out for.
