German duo Phantom Horse create a minimalist synesthesia that isn’t just seen with the ears but flashes patterns before your mind’s eye. The art of Floyd E. Schulze that adorns the cover is a perfect example of the designs that dance in your brain as you hear this record. Combining modular and analog synth with piano and guitar and several percussive techniques, these compositions tantalize and scintillate simultaneously. Everything is a mix of individualized activity that creates a flowing movement of braiding sonic structures. In my opinion, Phantom Horse builds a bridge between cutting edge artists like Sean McCann and Mark McGuire and old school innovators such as Klaus Schulze. Not quite new age but not pure komische or musique concrète either. Fun yet contemplative compositions that entertain and delight fill the time on this album. A debut worthy of ovation. I just love the art that really sets the tone for this album. Don’t just hear your music but see it. Like I said earlier, this is something that inspires and stimulates visualizations. I recommend flipping through pictures online or a book that features minimalist art. That’ll give you the ultimate experience. I thoroughly enjoyed my time.
