Sissy Spacek, “Dash / Anti-Clockwise”

There are 58 tracks on this release, which runs for a total of 12 minutes and 18 seconds. Some songs – and I use that term extremely loosely for this gang’s blown-out brand of unrelenting, scorched earth noise – barely reach the 10 second mark, while the longest last for only half a minute. Sissy Spacek are to noise like the Tasmanian Devil is to Looney Tunes, or Animal is to The Muppets: they are the craziest but also the most interesting characters.

This compilation collects a couple of now-it’s-here-now-it’s-gone releases in one succinct package. Here, the “Dash” LP (featuring Lasse Marhaug of Jazkamer and Will Strangeland of Silver Daggers) is coupled with the “Anti-Clockwise” seven-inch. Good luck, however, judging who plays what, where a particular track begins or ends, and just what the hell the difference is between one blast of destructo-clang and the next. This is essentially an undifferentiated mass of sheer chaos, enjoyable for splitting your skull or pissing off the neighbors.

If you dig this kind of thing – and on certain days, I most certainly do – it will be right up your alley. It’s like grindcore with the ‘grind’ maximized and the ‘core’ removed.
