Heatsick, “You Are Gorgeous And I’m Coming (1000 DB)”

This one’s technically from 2011, but hey, better late than never, right? Berlin’s Steven Warwick is one half of the noise duo Birds of Delay; his solo work as Heatsick is a little glossier and slicker, no less experimental but certainly not as abrasive. We last heard from Heatsick earlier in 2011, when he released the drone disco album Intersex on Pan. Yes, drone disco; it’s a concept that sounds ridiculous but ends up working really well, appealing to fans of everyone from Maria Minerva and Hype Williams to fellow Bird of Delay Luke Younger’s solo output as Helm or even the crunchy techno of Vatican Shadow.

You Are Gorgeous And I’m Coming is a decidedly more ambient affair, tinny machine beats and old keyboard globules carrying these three tracks forward. It’s more relaxed, a soothing morning-after comedown to Intersex‘s midnight revelry. It’s similar to Intersex, however, in that it’s a drone album that doesn’t actually, well, drone. Instead we get melodic and rhythmic phrases that seem to loop endlessly, resulting in a work that is at once in constant (yet glacial) motion and unapologetically static, locked in its own narcotized groove. This is a charming record whose juxtapositions perfectly accompany the collage cover artwork of Richard Hawkins that finds him “mixing images of works by Bacon, handwritten texts, Japanese writing and cut paper fragments.” Fascinating stuff as always from the EN/OF set.
