Cotton Museum, “Hatching Extraction” LP

Detroit-area artist Chris Pottinger has been recording music under the name Cotton Museum for a decade now, but I feel like he’s not quite as well known outside of Michigan. I could be wrong, but I definitely wasn’t familiar with him before I moved here. But having seen him twice in the past month or so, I think he’s definitely one of the more unique artists in the scene right now. During his live performances, he has all of his gear Velcroed onto a folding table, which he constantly nudges around and picks up so you think it’s all going to fall off. The music is a constant swarm of buzzing drones that lurch and sway, and are more prone to making you nauseous than drill your ears. The album’s gloriously putrid artwork and song titles (“Pus Hovel”, “Corpuscle Clot”, “Germ Spume”, “Veiny Casing” etc.) perfectly reflect the sounds. Just in time for Halloween, and people sure do love Halloween around here.
