RIP: Alice Coltrane 1937-2007

Alice Coltrane died in Los Angeles on Friday, January 12, the Los Angeles Times reports. She was 69 years old and suffered from respiratory failure.

Pitchfork's obituary (streaming audio available), for want of a better link.

Bah. I adore that woman and her music. Only a week or two ago I wrote: "I couldn't recommend highly enough Italian wunderkind multi-instrumentalist Valerio Cosi's "Immortal Attitudes" (CDR); his sun-drenched sax-drone-ragas will make you wish it was 1969 and you were on acid and hanging with Terry Riley at an Alice Coltrane gig - or vice versa."

I imagine Valerio is as sad as I am.

Sara - sad but true: "..As a famous widow with bold artistic designs of her own, Alice Coltrane has often been derided as the Yoko Ono of jazz..."

i have a friend who always says "the beatles broke up yoko ono" as opposed to the usual saying. i like it.
i hate how her vision is called "artistic designs of her own"....makes it sound like she had weird motives or something.

On a positive note we can only hope that now his mum is no longer hiding the masters under her bed we will get to hear more late period JC recordings from Ravi Coltrane - the showboat stuff he broadcast and which was subsequently bootlegged sounds great! Fingies crossed..
I suppose somebody somewhere will probably want to issue her 80s casette releases as well which may be a good or bad thing.
