The Refinement of Inland Empire

I think it may be more than just serendipity that the US release of David Lynch's new movie "Inland Empire" coincides roughly with the release of Stars of the Lid's first new album in six years, ""And Their Refinement of the Decline"" (Kranky), almost the exact same period of time since Lynch's last film, Mullholland Drive, and SOTL's last album were released.

Inland Empire is sort of a continuation of themes explored in "Mullholland Drive" but without the constraints or burdens of narrative plot. It's Lynch's most formless, nightmarish acid trip mind-mash ever, or at least since "Eraserhead." I don't think any established director has taken cheap digital video production to such creative heights. The textures of fabrics, walls and lamps are given the most alien wonder, and the angular geometric definition that the dv lends its subjects makes moments feel almost like a Picasso painting come to life. It's almost like a visual revolution, but against who or what? See it and decide for yourself. Anyway, essential wide-screen viewing and listening combined.

thats an interesting and plausible theory!

i'm so pissed that i haven't been able to see 'inland empire' yet... the closest its come to me has been chicago.. couldn't swing the trip.. been listening to the new SOTL non-stop for the past month or so... god it's fantastic.

There are a few more clues here and there to support the theory, but I think if there's any kind of genuine conspiracy, it exists purely on an unconscious level.
