Women Rock?

Brad and I have a collection of songs that we call "The Random Mix". It is truly random, populated by a bunch of old hits and a few newer ones that we randomly remembered (or re-discovered through Guitar Hero) and realized we needed to hear - repeatedly. Here's a sample - there are about 42 songs at the moment:

America "A Horse With No Name"
The Who "Won't Get Fooled Again"
Joan Jett & the Blackhearts "Bad Reputation"
Red Hot Chili Peppers "Under the Bridge"
John Mellencamp "Pink Houses"
Neil Diamond "Sweet Caroline"
Willie Nelson "Mama's Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys"
Kenny Rogers "The Gambler"

But we also noticed that very few of them were written or performed by women. This especially sucks since our niece's favorite Guitar Hero songs are the ones with female singers who kick ass. Surely, I thought, there are more women who rock? We came up with Joan Jett and Blondie, but couldn't think of any more. Anyone have any ideas?

Kim Gordon might request consideration in this category. I'd also include Yoshimi P-We.

Chrissie Hynde/Pretenders, Poly Styrene (X-Ray Spex), Nina Simone, Tina Turner, PJ Harvey, Carla Bozulich, Afrirampo, Sleater-Kinney, Laurie Anderson, Yoko Ono, Patti Smith, all the ladies they name in that Le Tigre song ("Hot Topic"). So many!

Lol, Kim Gordon doesn't belong in a random mix, she just belongs in your music collection, period.

A lot of the ladies you mention, Radio Free Burke, don't exactly "rock" in the musical-genre sense of the word.

Where are all the women with screechy-growly voices, crunchy guitars, and classic songs that we grew up with?

You can't forget Heart! "Barracuda," "Magic Man," and "Crazy On You" can't be beat.

I have a soft spot for the Breeders song "Cannonball." too.

Yeah, Heart is already included for sure.

But "Cannonball" is a really good suggestion. I haven't heard that song in too long....
