Accelera Deck "Live, Vol. 3"
Volume 3 is a half hour performance held in Richmond Virginia in June 2005. Having never heard Accelera Deck or any of Chris Jeely's stuff before, I could not say if this recording documents a above or below par performance, but I can say it's engaging. Using electronics, guitar, and manipulations of existing recordings, the mood of the performance changes from dark murk noise slurp to high end bliss drone through submerged heaviness to underground rock-isms and glides to conclusion on the back of a cinematic soundfield. Throughout the performance, ears are treated to multiple layers of sound that force the brain to work overtime to make sense of it all. Of the three or four distinct sections to the piece, there are numerous moments where the main blanket drone allows for various tones and melodies to rise up and out, usually at unexpected intervals. The one low point would be where a recording of what I assume to be an A.C. recording is run through Jeely's gear. The song he has chosen from the night is totally inappropriate for the nod out scene that had been created up to that point. There's nothing worse than to have just reached the most optimum of headspaces when some wickedly mediocre whammo rock shuts it all down. Those few minutes chop off an entire letter grade off what would be a solid, gold star performance. 7/10 --
