Earth "Living in the Gleam of an Unsheathed Sword"

Back to claim the crown wrested from their drug-addled, emaciated grip, Earth has come to remind the world of where all these doom-heads came from.

Here, Earth is stripped down to only Dylan's guitar on the first track (just over 14 minutes), with drums added for the hour-long second track. After the pretty terrible "Pentastar.." album, this is a welcome and damaged return (somewhat) to form. Harking back to their earlier sludge records, this now brings to mind bands like Sunn O)), who coincidentally, contains an ex-member of Earth, Joe Preston.

The music is comprised of simple, distorted riffs repeated over and over, sometimes fast, sometimes glacial. The drums make it a more dynamic affair, which pulls the listener out of the shadows. Dylan may not be making music as immediate and intense as he once was (in fact, Sunn O))) have taken his ideas to incredible new heights), but even so, only he could pull off a record like this with only one guitar. 8/10 -- Dick Baldwin (25 May, 2005)
