Spires That in the Sunset Rise "Four Winds the Walker"

?Four Winds the Walker,? the second Spires That in the Sunset Rise CD, finds the quartet exploring a paranoid folk psych that could be the soundtrack to witch hunt nightmares, pagan forest rituals and other rarely glimpsed late night visions. Acoustic guitars, violin and strings, shakers, percussion and some fairly disturbed harmonies and cackles straddle the line between accessible songcraft and paranoid atmospherics across the span of the disc. Those who dig on the new weird acoustic sounds of Larkin Grimm, Fursaxa and Islaja are probably already familiar. I can also hear the ghost of Comus and even Current 93 among some of the more necromantic pieces, but there is a feral energy in this tangled overgrowth that is entirely unique and quite seductive. ?Four Winds?? is worth a closer listen for those interested in such tendencies. 7/10 -- Lee Jackson (27 June, 2006)
