As there?s very little information about Ditzy Squall available, I didn?t have much to go on with this New Zealand trio other than their label?s distribution list (which includes Pumice, Vialka, and Limited Express, to name three disparate groups) and of course their music. It is, admittedly, not much. Ditzy Squall makes your standard manic, jagged, and angular post-rock/post-punk, with little to distinguish themselves. The songs sound studied rather than frenzied, and the high fidelity of the recording only serves to round off what should be much rougher edges. But an interesting thing happens on ?Yuri Geller Spoon Bender?: after two instrumental tracks, singer Chrissie Butler suddenly begins to sing, the other two members of the band chime in, and for a few brief moments the whole thing sounds like X-Ray Spex. It isn?t enough to save the album from the clich?s of the genre, but it does provide hope for future endeavors. 5/10 --
