David & the Citizens, a Swedish concern that?s been around since 1999, play brisk but dour pop that goes by so quickly it?s over just after you start the CD a-spinning. This EP contains album tracks and some b-sides, on which noticeable, but pleasant, indie influences become apparent: ?Graycoated Morning? swings breezily in a way that will make sense to Heavenly fans, and ?Big Chills? features a speedy, modulated mod melody, reminiscent of Ted Leo circa "Hearts of Oak" sans the guitar fury. It?s not always electric hipshake that drives the songs; ?Let Me Put It This Way? and ?Now She Sleeps in a Box in the Good Soil of Denmark? are fueled by acoustic guitar, although the hepped-up tempo remains. ?Summer in No Man?s Land,? with its spry harmonica intro, cleverly dekes the ?90s indie influences and connects instead to mid-60?s chart pop; miss the Beau Brummels? Here?s your fix. The band has a full-length coming out in 2006, the better for stateside pop fans to check out what all the Swedish fuss is about. 7/10 --
