Richard Skelton has been working on really beautiful stuff for his own private press imprint Sustain-Release for two years now, but it seems he?s only getting the attention he deserves recently. The fact that Skelton has the habit of changing his moniker for almost every release certainly doesn?t make it any easier for his work to gain attention. But once you have stepped into his musical world, you are bound to love its openness and its lack of distinction between musician, label owner, graphic artist, etc...
Riftmusic came to me in its first edition : a beautiful cardboard paper, folded around a 3" CDR, with a dedication to its new owner (each cover is individually addressed), and a real photo inside. And in addition: a little kraft envelope with found pine cones inside, a nice addition to the already impressive artwork. Riftmusic is the first in a series of 20-minute songs in the same mood and quality as Sustain-Release?s recent CDRs, perhaps in a more luminous way than before. Skelton creates unique music that is very dense and optimistic. A strange, welcoming orchestra of dozens of acoustic instruments are strung together without unison, creating a chaotic ensemble of solar drones. Already in its second edition, Riftmusic remains a really beautiful piece and a nice way to discover Richard Skelton/Sustain-Release?s world. 10/10 --
