Life on Earth! "Look!! There Is Life on Earth!"

Oh, yeah! We?re dealing with quite an impressive platter (OK, saucer) here. This very groovy offering begins with one of the most breathtaking moments from a CD in recent memory: a flute-fueled space-launch of an intro to the opening track, ?Life on Earth,? that simply soars. From that breathing crystal Canaveral we are treated to a very special tour-de-force of all of the best facets of psychedelia, psych/pop & prog grafted onto one another, producing a hybrid angel that exceeds all expectations. Since this is a spin-off from the wonderful Dungen, my expectations were pretty darn high, so BAM! We?re flown through pools of intoxicated djembes, sent laughing back & forth across the room by gloriously cheesy stereo panning effects. I love it when musicians aren?t too full of themselves to have fun and be a bit over-the-top with the sonic decorations! During the journey I was reminded of Jethro Tull in an uncommonly playful mood, XTC without the stilted academics & blasted on iboga, conversations with cotton candy, and skinny-dipping with space nymphs. There is a lesson to be learned here about giving oneself over to childlike splatters, even if one is quite capable of playing the daylights out of one?s instrument(s), about avoiding being too grim & serious. Without such abandon music becomes decidedly dry, no longer sticky with creative sap, and lacking the sweet breath of life. Thankfully we have Life on Earth! to play with. 10/10 -- John Bullabaugh (14 August, 2007)
