I had a hard time sniffing out any info on the Slutwash gang (other than my own deduction that they have a pretty stupid/awesome name), so I turned to the source ? I contacted the label. Third-party Internet recon can only be taken so far; sometimes you just need to get slapped in the ear by the horse?s mouth. Zach Ippen, who seems to be the man behind the Green Tape imprint, has this to say (I?ll lay it out for you in point form so as not to muddle the contents):
-Slutwash is a ?collective? of folks who ?jam? after shows in Dekalb, Illinois
-There are many, many members of Slutwash; once a member, always a member
-This release is called both ?Grill-n-Chill? and ?Lullabies?
-Four people played on the whole tape, with two additional people assisting on some of the songs
-The music was recorded live in Rockford, Illinois for an audience of three sleeping people
That this cassette was recorded live is unquestionable. You can hear sporadic muffled talking, and someone even yells ?Goddammit!? in the background at one point. The mix is somewhat uneven, but that fact seems to add to the overall atmosphere of the recording. The guitars and/or keyboards are situated far out in the stratosphere, while the drums and caterwauling vocals are located insanely nearby. Other instrumentation is scattered about, which only seems to heighten the overall grooviness of the proceedings. The music is indisputably ?jammy? in a loose interpretation of Sunburned Hand of the Man at their drunkest and most minimal. The B Side features some seriously bong-ridden sonic blasts, during which Slutwash collectively shamble toward a stoner?s Neverland.
There is something remarkable in the water over there in Dekalb, Illinois. I presume that it?s a healthy dose of something intoxicating, but one can never really be sure. Whatever it is, the men and/or women of Slutwash are immersing themselves in it, and creating some seriously sick psych jams in the process! 7/10 --
