This is a compilation of well-chosen and well-mashed covers by various Cobra//Group members? side projects. With nods to noise, pop and soul, tunes by 10CC, Prince, Billy Joel and Pink.
Floyd, among others, are given new life and have their original melodies and ideas extended with great care and abandon. I didn?t think it possible to cover ?It?s Still Rick & Roll to Me? or ?I?ve Got A Crush on You? without irony, but maybe that is just my aging-punk bias. The covers of ?I?m Not in Love? and ?Set The Controls For The Heart of the Sun? build off of the originals? fearless explorations, the former within a tight pop structure, the latter without a net; Veery and Apothecary Blue, respectively, add touches of noise and drone that enhance the humor and experimentation, making the tunes their own while keeping enough of the original shadows intact.
This is a cover record as it ought to be: reverent, but to a point. Music that has inspired in the past can be celebrated while at the same time used to show just how that inspiration has affected the listener/musician. In this case, Cobra//Group members explore their own audio history and extend ours. 7/10 --
