Steven R. Smith "The Anchorite"

Originally released in 2006 on Important Record?s Arts & Crafts series as a limited edition LP, ?The Anchorite? is re-released on the impressive SF based Root Strata label. As the name suggests, ?The Anchorite? is a heavily withdrawn recording that is both introspective and otherworldly.

Through a combination of tape loops, prerecorded takes and a myriad of live instrumentation, Steven R. Smith creates a dark and foggy cacophony that evokes a sort of ancient and archaic Balkan soundtrack all recorded live to stereo 2-track. A painterly vibe pervades, building a layered but barren landscape upon silence.

Beautifully packaged in a dark gatefold cardboard CD case with the artist?s own linoprint gracing the cover.

?The Anchorite? is a grand addition to Steven R. Smith?s already impressive discography and an even greater addition to your collection at home. 9/10 -- Michael Flora (19 February, 2008)
