?Mathematics? is a debut record that is a cool but passionate mix of soulful vocals and electronic soundscapes. The tone is warm and there is a peace to the record that is more personal than most in the genre.
Renfro are Brits Tim Branney (vocals) and Atom-James Draper (sound mixer/excavator). Branney?s sensitive pop sense always provide a human touch to the mix of found sounds, static and nature cries that make up the ten tunes? construction. This gives tunes like ?Broken Little Pieces,? ?Illuminations? and ?Map of Missing Things? a poetic feel, and a hopeful one, no small feat in this genre. Yet Renfro establishes throughout the insistence on melody and warmth, and they have with that quietly expanded the possibilities for the future of their work and the genre as a whole.
?Mathematics? comes at a time when Renfro already have a growing fan base and buzz, thanks to live performances. This mix of the experimental and soulfully familiar shows Renfro to be a band with a heart as well as courage. This is an emotional and emotionally daring record, and you will be pleasantly haunted for awhile after a few spins. 8/10 --
