On ?Sui-Gin,? (Japanese for mercury) Ueno performs a primarily percussive and austere set of work in which you cannot understate his debt to the late, great Derek Bailey. The foundations of the 12-string acoustic solo pieces are extended through his use of the ring modulator, lending the instrument rich textural and harmonic possibilities impossible to achieve through a purist's approach. The relationship of notes, harmonics and overtones form complex relationships, giving the music a lovely sense of zero-gravity. The abstractions may leave the listener scratching his or her head, but the hints of melody throughout should be enough to string the listener along over the course of the disc, and that's if the all-out exotic approach to sound isn't enough to woo your ears. 7/10 --
