“Tooth” is the debut full-length from Minneapolis-based Ghost in the Water, the husband/wife duo of Nathan and Mandy Tensen-Woolery. This duo offers up an engaging brew of sputtering electronic pop with touches of strings, keys, and acoustic guitar providing a serene melodic counterpoint. While the song arrangements are complex in places, the vocals, whether sung by each individually or in harmony, are delivered with a sense of earnestness and are steeped in matters of the heart. Some of Bjork’s work comes to mind here, both sonically and vocally, particularly when Mandy approaches her breathy expressionism on “A Nightmare”. Elsewhere, as on “I’m Not Afraid of Falling” and “Lake Ice”, they distinguish themselves with vocal interaction that strives for harmony but sounds more like an intimate conversation between the couple. It may be unbearably melodramatic for some, for others something pleasant to cuddle up with. 6/10 --
