This is a band that I have not delved into before, so I couldn’t really say how this differs from their older work, but this album took me a few spins to get into. It kind of has this dumbed down if-Jucifer-were-fronted-by-Yoko-Ono quality to it that definitely appeals to the side of me that just loves loud dumb rock (and Yoko Ono), but there is a certain je ne se quoi here. Despite the heavily damaged rock sounds, or perhaps because of them, there is a certain sense of true exploration taking place on the part of the performers. This kind of thing is really hard to pull off convincingly and in a manner that I want to listen to repeatedly, and yet here I am listening to it again.
Having said all of this, I am pretty sure this kind of thing isn’t for everyone, so if you aren’t so patient, or just can’t handle the sound of strangulated female vocal explorations over fuzzed out behemoth bass riffs and frenetic drum pummel than this is definitely not for you. My recommendation: one spin won’t kill you; there is a lot to be had from this album in the department of sonic exploration within a seemingly limited set up. 7/10 --
