California’s Heavy Psych imprint is relatively new on the scene, but there are already around thirty cassettes and CD-Rs flying their flag. Specializing in harsh noise and drones, the HP roster includes the likes of Wether and Women in Tragedy – they’ve even released a tape by the legendary To Live and Shave in L.A. “It’s Battery Acid You Slime” collects tracks from twelve noise practitioners, the majority of which haven’t yet had a release on the label. Running the gamut from scum-ridden clatter to blown-out buzzing to full-on fallout shelter boogie, the whole cassette is sure to induce ear blood fountains. Highlights include Blue Sabbath Black Cheer’s drone dread “Maggot”; a healthy dollop of blast damage courtesy of Tusco Terror; Pig Heart Transplant’s speaker-melting ode to bad food, “Shelf-Life.” This is first date music for psychopaths – beautiful in its ugliness! 8/10 --
