It took me a long time to attempt to write this review, the sole reason being that I love this album so much I can't really express that love properly. Hard to pin down, “Memory” incorporates elements of drone, post-rock and epic swathes of drama – often in the same song. Animal Hospital's sole member – multi-instrumentalist Kevin Micka – has released a demon of a record, one that might be impossible to top.
The six tracks that comprise this stunning release unveil themselves assuredly yet with a beguiling temperance. Each song quietly invades the listener's head space, creeping up on its unsuspecting victim. Micka's warm textures slowly evolve and permeate the surrounding atmosphere – the music is inviting, a rarity for a mostly instrumental recording. “Memory” appears to be an extremely personal album for Micka, and we are truly lucky that he has invited us into his sound world.
