Area C "Charmed Birds Vs. Sorcery"
Birds and magic seem to be the theme of this release, but you might not know it from merely listening to the disc. Musically, the artist mixes musique concrete, drone, glitch, and prog-rock, creating strange, unpredictable soundscapes. A few pieces utilize a crackly, distorted sound that sounds halfway between a tape fast forwarding, and some tiny robot short circuiting. "Fact, Fancy, Legend" uses these sounds alongside glitched-out proggy guitars and some stray, non-rhythmic drum machine ticks. "Sleeping Birds" chops up a poem about birds, surrounded by a nest of droney guitar. The disc's centerpiece is its title track, a 21 minute epic of slowly building guitar flourishes, anchored by a consistent but not quite rhythmic series of vaguely percussive short-circuit sounds. The disc ends with a tranquil, gently pulsating piece called "Black-Thorn, Falcon, Picris".
An odd sort of bird, to be sure, but this release conjures up some bizarre, fascinating images, just not necessarily bird-related. 8/10 --
