The constellations and ritualistic symbolism of its cover, as well as its title, hint at a sort of primitive aesthetic on this here cassette, something which is confirmed by the hazy and ceremonial music contained within. Daughters of the Sun operate under the umbrella of newfangled psychedelia, what with the spacey synth atmospherics, reverb-heavy vocals, and dense guitar histrionics. And it is their unchained approach that makes “Ancient of the Ancients” such a tremendous jaunt. This expansive epic balances mystical whimsy with thicker rock-music formations – the first part of side B, for instance, comes off as a nearly straightforward psych-rock track, only to transition into a pretty bed of airy keys and jingling windchimes. It's a curious juxtaposition, and one that's mirrored on the also-formidable side A, which starts off with new-agey naturalism only to eventually break into a hefty maelstrom of keyboard swells, booming percussion, and swooping feedback. With this brief cassette, these Minnesotans have proven to be a pretty damn stellar psych act, one which confirms my faith in a genre that has established its cliches but skillfully operates within them. 8/10 --
