One of the promo pictures for Disgust of Us shows a guy with his teeth clenched around a cymbal. That photo pretty much sums up the Disgust of Us’s sound: raw, angry, hungry and unafraid. They have a screamy female vocalist who sings at times, too. Sometimes there’s aggressive male vocals tag teaming it in the background. Sometimes the guy takes over the lead. Sometimes there are even special effects type sounds like water running (or something that sounds like that). Mostly, though, this is a brutal rock record that’s occasionally catchy underneath all the anger. Anger, of course, is not usually terribly original and neither are Disgust of Us, though they’ve made a pretty pummeling record, the kind that makes you want to beat someone up and dance at the same time. This is only their debut, of course, and there are melodic moments, especially in the singing and the song, “Dearly Departed,” that hint that this band has a lot more to offer, a much broader sound, for example, than is found on this record – but for that, we will have to wait and see. 5/10 --
