Drekka "Collected Works: Vol. 1 (1996)" CD-r
This 2xCD volume collects Drekka's earliest work including 3 EP's and 30 minutes of unreleased material. The first track on this set gives you an immediate feel for the rest of what is to come. It starts off with the sound of rain which immediately hints to the bleakness and sorrow of this collection which is reminiscent of post industrial groups like Coil and Current 93 but at the same time has the spirit of early Smog recordings. These songs feature everything from a cappella singing, instrumental acoustic songs, drones and tones, phone messages, whispery voice, and last but not least, tape hiss. The amount of tape hiss, echo, and reverb can be something that gives home recordings that special charm but I gotta say on these recordings I couldn't help but get annoyed by the excessive use of these effects. It's always interesting to hear an artists early works to see where they came from, how they have improved or in some cases gotten worse, etc. Either way this is a nice look into the past of this Bloomington, IN artist. Anyone interested in the work of Drekka or anyone interested in the early/mid 90's lo-fi vibe will definitely want to hear this. 5/10 --
