L/ M/ R/ W/: Leo Fabriek, Mariska Baars, Rutger Zuydervelt, and Wouter van Veldhoven. “Drifts” consists of two live performances originally issued on a Digitalis cassette and a studio effort released on a 3’’ CDr from Machinefabriek. With analogue (harmonium, melodica, guitar) and digital (effects, sampler, editing) audio generation the quartet explore refreshingly organic and warm soundscapes. On “Birthday” they conjure a static tone and add color with a gentle pace. It’s a case of people playing music together with careful give and take, discovering churning eddies and purring resonances. “Clay” matches whistling and whispering sonic qualities and could have been an electrified jam session from a jug band of telepathic, circular breathing yogic philosophers. Near the end of the piece L/ M/ R/ W/ prove they can wield the razor’s edge as creeping sirens and rushing steam make a sudden white hot blast. Between “Clay” and album closer “Tegendraads” is a near-silent segue terminating in a startling, single note piano strike. The final track has the most discernable aural layers: sustained octave, nimble piano, deep guitar bends, percussive popping. It’s a peaceful conclusion, capping a record you can fall into deeply and easily fall for. 8/10 --
