In Voltron fashion, Vibes assembles to become a whole which is greater than the sum of its parts. Voltron (or Power Rangers if don’t remember Voltron) came together as a unit, each team member forming arms, legs, torso, head, and so forth to become a mighty juggernaut. Well, members of Pocahaunted, Robedoor, Magic Lantern, and Fantastic Ego all came together to groove out a new unstoppable musical force. And it sounds awesome. Vibes, if you’re reading this, please put out some more releases! Take a break from all your other tours and projects and collaborate on some more vivacious riot anthems.
The beauty of Vibes is not only that it’s a force to be reckoned with, putting together the best heads and coming up with something noteworthy, but it is a melting together of each artist’s formula into the “Psychic” cauldron. You have low-fi goodness, skull-simmering psychedelia, soul-tugging funkadelia, neighborhood-rousing garage junk, and inspiring female vocal duties from Amanda Brown (Pocahaunted). Some of the funky wah vibe reminds me of Sun Araw, like “Heavy Deeds” for example. But this one seems to have a lot of energy. Almost seems like Vibes has an urgent message to get across, like a collection of prophets that are better messengers through music than oration. A true record for the restless summer days ahead. 8/10 --
