Mr. Ettinger, from Bloomington, IN, continues to make a name for himself. The thing is, this time he’s gotten a bunch of his buddies together to assist as The Heat. This 7” on Not Not Fun is a sweet addition to any collection. It features two sides of wax that unleash some futuristic vision circa 1980. The dreamy lo-fi synth on this 45 is like a Back to the Future II style take on the music of the millennium. Definitely as weightless as a hover board, as time warping as a DeLorean, and as stimulating as a flux capacitor. It is forward thinking in an old school way. His first ever vinyl release comes with art that perfectly matches the sound. Super 80’s retro.
I also like the Miami Vice inspired comment that the label makes. I think it also adequately describes the record.
“[A] sick session of smoky synth themes, Corvette noir moods, echo dystopia, faded voices, and sleazy Miami sax. The A, “Smokin’,” is the more ballad-y of the pair, sad and smooth, just fired-from-the-force, midnight cruising on the strip, no one to call. The B, “Miami Heat (The Stakeout),” amps the tension, camera zooming in over palm trees and blue-lit swimming pools, a deco mansion on the coast, the place is surrounded, the heat is on, all that. A cool sleaze-psych vision, sickly executed, by a rad fresh energy from the underground.”
A pretty slick way of describing an even slicker 7”. If you’ve been happy with what NNF has been putting out these days, this is destined to land on your turntable. Again, NNF just kills it with the freshest artists and the best cover art anywhere! 8/10 --
