Did somebody say, Beach Party?!!! This one is the perfect setup for fun in the sun. A beautiful vibe for these current times. Magic Lantern gives us funky fun on their latest collection of acid psych jams, “Platoon.” Sand encrusted guitar, draped with sopping seaweed. Salty waves of refreshment rip and crash. Warming sun-bleached wah and freckling natural effects. Mirage-inducing pipes. Hazy heat melts your brain. Open up the cooler and grab a drink. Let loose and join in this platoon’s battle hymns against former sour days. Enjoy today. Probably my favorite of these seven tracks is the second, “Moon Lagoon Platoon.” It’s a nice break from the all the excitement of “Dark Cicadas” as you find relief from the blazing summer in the cool of a secluded lagoon, hidden away from the rockin’ party. But don’t stay too long, perhaps only five and a half minutes, because the festivities have just started. “Planar/Sonar” picks it back up where “Dark Cicadas” left off and towels you off with some more rousing riffs. I’m loving the echoes of these totally tripped out vocals that drop into your brain. They come coolly as a revitalizing shower from the thick scorching rays of curling notes that fly off these frets.
If you get the CD version, it comes with the “Showstopper” 7”. It’s a cover of Iron Knowledge’s original. I haven’t heard the initial track, but I’m sure Magic Lantern does justice. The B-Side from that single, “Cypress” closes down the party and announces, Last Call to the party contained on this album. If you get the vinyl, then make sure you hunt down a copy of “Showstopper.” It’s a must-have companion to “Platoon” that is absolutely mandatory. More cool peace, love, and rock ‘n roll style art. All released from our fairy godfriends at Not Not Fun, who come through every time in making our wishes come true. Another amazing release to add to their inventory. 9/10 --
