Trike "Trike and the Vikings"

What surprised me most about Trike, a Canadian man-woman duo who make sleazy pop music with cheap beats, was how conflicted I was about their music. On the one hand, I really wanted to hate it (sample lyric: “Oh my god I'm so hot she said! / Holy shit I'm adorable / Look at me in this outfit! / I'm so fuckable!”). On the other hand, there was something oddly endearing about these songs—Trike basically sounds how I act when I'm drunk. While this did lead me to relate to this album on some level, it isn't enough for me to recommend this album; all it really suggests is that I'm annoying when I'm drunk.

The problem with this music is that it’s lazily made. This doesn't detract too much from the beats—you're meant to shake your ass to these songs, not sit back and dissect them. However, this laziness does result in some pretty awful lyrics. Trike are clearly trying to be funny; their press release lists Ween as one of their influences. Unfortunately, one gets the sense that Trike lean on humor not because it’s their strong suit (after all, Ween are funny) but because they really don't have anything worthwhile to say.

In spite of these shortcomings, this music isn't horrible. I'll bet Trike's two members really enjoyed composing these songs. However, I don't think I would ever put this record on again, except to revel in how stupid some of these lyrics are. Because of this, I can't recommend you purchasing this.
