M. Holterbach & Julia Eckhardt "Do-Undo (In G maze)"
A piece of grand minimalism, “Do-Undo” pits the long-form viola pieces played in G of Julia Eckhardt with the sound art of Manu Holterbach. Two pieces at just under an hour, the disc recalls the epic work of Elaine Radigue or Phil Niblock. If these were two separate, solo discs of works, I’m unsure how captivating they would be. But together, this is a rich collection of sounds, balance between the patience of drone, with the skittering madness of Holterbach’s experiments, both getting their place in the sun while still being complimentary.
The long fading in and out, the buzzing of the viola and the variety of Holterbach’s field recordings make the first track exceptional, while the second track utilizes the same long fade in and out, the viola pulls back more, creating a less celebratory mood and exploring some really dark areas. 7/10 --
