?Mandrake? is a thick vinyl reissue of an early Fursaxa album, originally hatched via the Acid Mothers Temple?s psychedelic henhouse in an edition of 100 CD-R?s. It?s a fine dish for anyone reared on the minimal art pop of Nico and the more dusted folk/noise workouts of the Charalambides and Popol Vuh. Such influences and charming, homespun production values merge as resounding, heavenly choral arrangements and more delicate lo-fi folk pop detours. It?s really quite incredible considering it was probably recorded in a bedroom somewhere in Philadelphia. Tara Burke, who is Fursaxa, fully integrates vocals, guitar, organ, dulcimer, casio and accordion into a swirling harmonic vortex that shimmers with walls of devotional noise and her own looped vocals and, in the process, manages to arrive at a path rarely trodden today. Highly recommended. 8/10 --
