"Ultimately? is the second long player from the duo of THTX, aka Matthew Smith and Detroit area percussionist Kerry Gluckman. They specialize in extended improve/psych instrumentals that follow on the promise of Smith?s stab at Krautrock and Hawkwind appreciation as heard on ?The Spectral Book of Projections? (Poptones), all rendered in Smith?s trademark vintage sound. Here the extended jams are entirely the point, though, with Smith unleashing a feral dose of smoldering fuzz and wah all over Gluckman?s throbbing, jazz inspired percussion. The end results invoke the ghosts of past heavy psych/jazz masters such as Magma, Amon D??l II and King Crimson to masterful effect with a compelling mix of heavy fuzz throb, extended drones and more ethnic trance interludes. These 4 tracks, ranging from 6 to nearly 24 mins long, are as fine representations of extended, brain-smoldering improve as anything you?ll find released (and recorded) in 2004. 7/10 --
