Quick! Stop! The fairies are attacking! Okay, not really attacking, per se, but they're here and they have muffins! Wait, stop... what am I saying? Kuupuu is out there. The solo project of Kukkiva Polisii-member (and sometimes Anaksimandros contributor) Jonna Karanka is like the mostly-unplugged, criminally insane version of elfin Icelanders, M?m. Oh, and she's Finnish (which shouldn't surprise any of you). This short release (it clocks in at under 20 minutes) is delightful! Fractured folk melodies with a severe leaning toward psychedelia are standard here. "Junamusaa" uses chimes and glockenspiel to create a whimsical atmosphere. Additional acoustic instrumentation is provided by a guitar (that sounds out of tune), while Karanka's voice is doubled. There is a lot of texture here. It reminds me of the hay bales that line the streets on the way to my parents' house. Such intricate confusion wrapped in a tight package. It's excellent. Throughout these 20 minutes, it's like being taken through a time warp, led the entire way by a fairy queen. Something like that anyway. My biggest complaint is that this is so short. I am sad each time it ends; I keep wanting more. Bonus points for the fantastic handmade sleeves that are covered in drawings made by Karanka. She's got talent dripping from her pores. 7/10 --
