Jason Henn is from Kitchen Typists, and O'Connell is from a Foxy favorite, Elephant Micah. So it's fitting that I like this 7". I'm a big fan of Drekka, and this single reminds me a lot of that project. There's this whole avante-folk scene taking off and the more I get into it, the more I love it. This single has everything from cricket chirp sounds to a drum loop that's reminiscent of a dot matrix printer. I always thought the rhythmic punches of a dot matrix would make a great beat for a disjointed piece, and it does. It seemlessly holds together the acoustic meanderings and country-ambience of the track. Keeping a loosely-pieced sound college together isn't easy, but Henn and O'Connell pull it off. This music feels very American; stuck in the heartland. I keep imagine a small town in Ohio where everyone works in the same factory. That is what this single pulls out of me. I do admit, there's a bit much noodling around for me; when the songs are more coherent, they're definitely better than when they kind of just stray away from any sort of structure. Overall, a fine offering from the Luddite label, and one that makes me hope these two will put out a full length. 6/10 --
