Freiband "Martin: Seven New Aspects"

Frans de Waard's Freiband project continually demands attention. It's like that favorite dessert you always forget you love until you see it on the menu somewhere. Everytime a new Freiband release shows up in my mailbox, I'm reminded of the sonic excellence which de Waard unleashes under this moniker. Freiband's cosmic drone explorations are made of stellar dust. These seven electronic soundscapes make you feel as though you're weightless. Minimal electronic washes bathe you in synthetic light. As you float, you are bombarded with a sensory overload on track 4. The loud, spastic percussive blasts are a shock to the system, bringing you out of the trance de Waard puts you in with the first three pieces. But it doesn't last long, by the time track 5 is in full bloom, it's back to the dark, insular aural underworld that Freiband traverses so well. The end of this short release brings you back out of your hynpotic state. Heavily treated field recordings are the fingersnap that sucks you back into reality after your no-gravity escape. Frans de Waard proves once again that when he is making music as Freiband, he is on another planet entirely. 7/10 -- Brad Rose (18 July, 2005)
