Like many of the New Zealand acts that influenced this recording, Gastric Female Reflex can swing in and out of a number of styles or simply manipulate them to bend to their will. Their efforts, for the most part, are successful. It's when the boys force their square peg desire through a too round slot that things fall apart. The 13 minute opener, 'pre/post sweatpants delay' is a nice mix of rough edged acoustic free music, psych, & drone. Aside from the silliness of the name, it's probably the highlight of the disc. The next four tracks retain acoustic elements but shift considerably toward sounds in league with what has been coming out of the American Tapes camp. The more distorted, aggressive, and abrasive the sounds become, the more out of place they seem, at least on this release anyway. I probably would have been more aligned with Moments had it been presented as two 3" cdrs or something of the like. Still, this is a solid release by a formidable bunch of Canucks? and just when I was complaining that it seems that the only worthwhile Canadian stuff I'm hearing is from Montreal or Vancouver. 8/10 --
